As many of you know, Overton County Schools was not awarded the state LEAPS Afterschool Grant for the upcoming school year. While we are disappointed by that outcome, we also recognize that many of our families depend on afterschool care.
Because of that need, the district is exploring the possibility of continuing an afterschool program using local district funds. This represents a significant financial commitment for Overton County Schools, but we understand the important role afterschool care plays in supporting working families.
Since this program would be funded locally rather than through a state or federal grant, we must ensure that our limited resources are directed to the families who need them most. Therefore, participation will be based on demonstrated need, and families will be required to provide transportation home from the program.
At this time, we are asking interested families to complete a Needs Assessment Application. This application will help us determine the level of need, identify the schools and grade levels with the greatest demand, and assist us in designing a program that is both sustainable and responsive to our community.
Priority consideration will be given to families who require afterschool care due to parent or guardian work schedules. We are also exploring a program focused primarily on students in Kindergarten through 4th Grade, where the need for afterschool care is greatest, while offering limited opportunities for older students based on available space and demonstrated need.
Completing the application does not guarantee enrollment, but it is an important step in helping us determine how to best serve our families while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.
